Car Damage Estimator AI: Does It Really Work?
Artificial Intelligence is diagnosing diseases and writing code. But can it tell you how much it costs to fix a dent in your 2022 Toyota Camry?
FixMyCar AI claims to do just that. We put it to the test to see if computer vision can replace a mechanic's clipboard.
The Technology: Computer Vision for Damage
FixMyCar AI uses a specialized Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) trained on millions of images of vehicle damage. It looks for:
- Depth: Is it a scratch (paint only) or a dent (metal deformation)?
- Location: Is it on a removable panel (bumper) or the uni-body (quarter panel)?
- Severity: Area of impact.
The Test
We uploaded photos of three different scenarios:
1. The Parking Lot Scrape
Real Quote: $450 AI Estimate: $380 - $500 Verdict: Accurate. The AI correctly identified it as a cosmetic repaint.
2. The Cracked Bumper
Real Quote: $1,200 (Replacement needed) AI Estimate: $1,000 - $1,400 Verdict: Accurate. The AI flagged that the crack required a full part replacement, not just filler.
3. Hidden Structural Damage
Real Quote: $3,500 AI Estimate: $800 - $1,200 Verdict: Miss. This is the limitation. AI cannot see under the hood. It can only assess visible external damage.
Conclusion
FixMyCar AI is an incredible tool for triage. It won't replace a teardown inspection for major accidents, but for the 90% of minor dings and scrapes, it gives you a powerful devastatingly accurate baseline to negotiate with.
