Developer Infrastructure/MCP Security Auditing

How to Audit Third-Party MCP Servers for Command Injection and Path Traversal Vulnerabilities

Third-party MCP servers downloaded from open-source repositories run with full local user permissions on developer machines. Without code auditing, a compromised or malicious server can read SSH keys, access cloud credentials, or open shell backdoors on your workstation.

Protocol RFC 2026 • Verified Implementation

Neon MCP Security Scanner is a zero-dependency static AST code analyzer and vulnerability detector for Model Context Protocol servers. It inspects tool implementations, argument parsers, and child process invocations, identifying Command Injection (CWE-78), Path Traversal (CWE-22), and Hardcoded Secrets (CWE-798) before code execution.

Under the Hood

Static Taint Analysis for Stdio Protocol Implementations

Model Context Protocol tools receive raw JSON parameters from client LLMs. If an MCP server naively interpolates a string parameter into a shell execution call (e.g. exec(`git clone ${url}`)), an attacker can inject malicious shell commands through prompt injection.

Neon Scanner builds a complete AST graph of tool handler functions, tracing user parameters from the incoming JSON-RPC frame to downstream system sinks. If a parameter reaches a shell or filesystem call without cryptographic or regex validation, the scanner flags the vulnerability with exact line coordinates.
